I didn't sleep very well last night, and woke up with a sore throat and feeling generally grumpy. (ALSO FYI, WORLD, "WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THIS SUMMER?" IS OFFICIALLY MY MOST HATED QUESTION. GO DIAF.) I'm starting to get to that point in the semester where I just want it to be over so I can sleep for a week and recover or something.
Also, I had a long dream where I debated the merits of imposing positive obligations on the government in the Constitution... which was both bizarre and incredibly nerdy. (I dream about having law debates!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME???) But now it's made me want to discuss this for real. What do you think? Should a constitution be limited to things the state
can't do (e.g. don't torture, don't hold people in arbitrary detention, don't persecute people for their religion, don't persecute people for their speech) or should it impose actual
obligations on the government? Can you interpret something like "right to life, liberty, and security of the person" to include the right to a living wage, to shelter, and to healthcare? (The Canadian Supreme Court's answer to this, btw, was "Not right now, but try us again in the future" so I like to think of it as an open question). I was inspired enough to go babble about it on my SRS BLOG
here. It's not like I have real work to do for school or anything. XD
In other news, I've started watching
Sailor Moon from the beginning on Youtube. Yeah. And ngl, I've always wondered how the series ended since YTV randomly stopped it in the middle. Anyway, I have three general observations:
1). A show about girls who are superheroes who fight bad guys who are also women! It's not exactly what I would call "feminist," but I think it's great I had that growing up. I hope girls have something like
Sailor Moon to watch nowadays.
2). Pretty much every single fandom I've had since then resembles
Sailor Moon's general outline in some form. Especially Buffy. Oh my god,
especially Buffy. I totally have a Fandom Type.
3). Okay, this is the thing about superhero stories - it drives me NUTS that no one can ever figure out their ~secret identities~. REALLY? REALLY? ALL YOU DO IS CHANGE YOUR CLOTHES. EVEN YOUR HAIR STAYS THE SAME... HOW DO... I DON'T... ARGH. (This is not limited to Sailor Moon, btw. I was always baffled by the same thing when it came to Superman. YOU DON'T LOOK
THAT DIFFERENT. HOW DOES NO ONE BUT ME NOTICE THE SIMILARITIES?)
